CLAIRE BAYTAS, MHS 2008

Oberlin College, Class of 2012

Comparative Literature

Were you financially prepared for college?

I hoped so, but wasn’t sure. As college in the United States is a very expensive endeavor, it’s hard to ever feel fully prepared.

How does the MSF scholarship help you prepare for college?

It gave me a huge financial boost going into college. I knew paying the tuition costs would be much easier with the assistance of the scholarship.

Why did you want a MSF scholarship?

Because of the high cost of college tuition, I knew I needed as much financial assistance as I could get.

Did you know anything about MSF before you applied for a scholarship?

No.

If you could not have afforded college, what other options did you have?

If I could not have afforded college, I would have looked for a job, hoping to save up enough money to eventually go to college.

What is your major?

Comparative Literature.

In addition to the MSF scholarship, what other types of financial aid or support did you use?

I also received a merit scholarship from Oberlin.

What is your plan for the future?

After graduating from college in 2012, I taught English abroad for two years and next year plan to begin graduate school.

What would you say to current MHS seniors who seek financial aid?

To apply for every opportunity they can find, even if they believe they aren’t the perfect applicant.

What do you remember best about being at Montclair High School/Montclair?

At the high school, I remember best my involvement in CGI (Civics and Government Institute) and the swim team.

Please describe any volunteer/community service during high school?

Doing community service was a component of CGI. I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and at the Montclair Public Library.
